Commercial retail developer Prestige Development Group is set to break ground this spring for The Shops at Abilene Village, a new 171,027-square-foot development that will be the largest shopping center to open in Abilene, TX in the last decade.

Located off the Winters Freeway at 3550 S Clack Street, The Shops at Abilene Village will be replacing the McGavock Nissan Dealership near Abilene Mall and The Shops of Abilene.

The development will house a mixture of restaurant, small retail and anchor retail spaces with an added accessibility feature for existing area retail. Academy Sports + Outdoors and Burlington Stores are among the first tenants of the shopping center, and will occupy 50,000 square feet and 72,000 square feet, respectively. The new Burlington retail location will be the retailer’s 67th Texas store and its first location in the Abilene market.

The Shops at Abilene Village breaks ground at a time when retail chains are struggling, shutting down locations and filing for bankruptcy. Warren Buffett directed his holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, to sell over $900 million of Walmart stock, which many feel signifies the end of traditional retail. He told investors in an annual meeting for Berkshire Hathaway, "the department store is online now."

A report from Adyen and Morar Consulting slightly disagrees with Buffett’s sentiment, finding that customers still prefer traditional retail but want retailers to implement new technologies that will enhance and accelerate the shopping experience.

Only time will tell if retailers at The Shops at Abilene Village will be successful. The shopping center is expected to open in 2018.
