The world’s first pop-up mall : BoxPark

Published
Apr 18, 2011

A retail revolution, according to the founders of this innovative project so named BoxPark from Roger Wade, creator of Boxfresh and fashion brand consultancy brands incorporated, in partnership with real estate developers Hammerson and Ballymore.

BoxPark will “pop-up” this August at Goodsyard, A 4.7 hectares site and former railway goodsyard, which has been unused for over 40 years and lies nearby the neighbourhood of Shoreditch, and to the North of the City of London.

These retail spaces called ‘box shops’ will not be available for high street retailers, but to innovative and selected brands by invitation only. This concept will reinterpret container boxes into useful retail space with a 'low cost', 'low risk' ethos, according to the organisers.

A total of 60 ‘box shops’ with a surface of 12 x 2.30 metres will be laid out into two floors. Prices for let will be affordable and contracts flexible so as to open up possibilities to a varied product mix including international and creative brands, art galleries and even cafés.

The pop-up mall concept has already appealed to foreign investors and brands worldwide. Roger Wade explains that he has been contacted with various business proposals to develop this concept further in England and other regions of the world, but he prefers to remain cautious and awaits to see the results of this first-ever pop-up mall taking place this August.
