Uniqlo’s latest designer collaboration comes from German-born fashion designer Tomas Maier, who will be tasked with designing the Japanese brand’s first ever Resort collection.

Tomas Maier will design a Resort collection for the Japanese company - Collier Schorr for Bottega Veneta

Maier is the creative director of Kering-owned luxury brand Bottega Veneta, which recently showed its AW 2018 collection in New York.

His first collection for Uniqlo will include men’s and women’s pieces, and is expected to launch online and in Uniqlo stores in early summer, announced the Japanese company on Tuesday.

The edit will follow the “time off” and “escape” philosophies usually seen in Maier’s work and will focus on the retailer’s LifeWear concept, which delivers innovative and functional clothing.

Tomas Maier commented on the collaboration: “The concept of my brand is based on simple, yet sophisticated designs. Tomas Maier is all about clothes for time off – a way for people to enjoy a much-needed escape from some of the complexities of modern living. I am confident that we were able to incorporate Uniqlo’s remarkable technologies and expertise successfully into our collaboration line, which I hope can help people to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.”

Yuki Katsuta, Senior Vice President of Fast Retailing und Head of Research & Design at Uniqlo, highlighted the similarities between the brands, saying that both Maier and Uniqlo integrate innovate details into high quality clothing made with the best materials.

The Japanese clothing company has also recently collaborated with British designer J.W. Anderson. Designer collaborations have become a central part of the brand’s proposition since the first collection designed by Jil Sander in 2009.
