Toronto Fashion Week launches 'Window Wars'

Published
Aug 29, 2019

The organizers behind Toronto Fashion Week (TFW) announced on Wednesday the launch of a new video series that mergers art, fashion and film, in an attempt to “disrupt the traditional retail window display and change how consumers perceive the shopping experience.”

Set to film for four days commencing on September 2, the multi-micro webisodes will feature Canadian/German art director Tatjana Green and Toronto-based Krystin Leigh Smith, going head-to-head to create the most compelling window displays.

The displays will be created using collections from Canadian fashion designers showcasing at Toronto Fashion Week this season.

“Window Wars challenges the traditional notions of retail displays much like how MasterChef did for chefs,” explained Melissa Campisi, Director, Strategic Partnerships & Event Marketing, Yorkville Village.

“This opportunity offers a unique perspective on how consumers approach the collision of fashion, art and retail – especially in the digital era. It also allows us to create an interactive community experience, engaging with those in the Yorkville neighbourhood – whether they have attended a Toronto Fashion Week event or otherwise.”

The episodes will premiere on tfw.to as of September 19, with a confirmed four week run. The works will also be exhibited at 92 Yorkville Avenue in Toronto from September 5, until October 23, 2019.

It’s not the first time the Canadian fashion showcase has thought of a unique way to highlight designer collections. Last year, Canadian fashion designers teamed up with restaurants and bars in Bloor-Yorkville to create special dishes and cocktails inspired by the designers’ collections, as part as an initiative dubbed Style Plate

The biannual showcase will make its return September 3 to the 5, along with some of Canada’s top designers including Canadian favourites such as Christopher Bates, Hilary MacMillan, Lesley Hampton and Narces.

The event will once again take place at venues including Yorkville Village, The Hazelton Hotel, the Royal Ontario Museum and a variety of art galleries in and around the Yorkville community.
