Trump’s pro-America stance challenged by namesake line

Published

Donald Trump continues to lead the Republican race despite his polarizing persona. His remarks on Mexico, China and immigration directly resulted in Macy’s and PVH severing ties with him. The Republican presidential debate on March 3 in Detroit saw the Donald J. Trump Collection as a topic of discussion on Trump’s character once again.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio on Thursday called out Trump for his clothing line that is made primarily in Mexico and China, despite Trump's views on the two countries' effects on the US economy. Rubio continued to challenge Trump saying that his collection is produced overseas to increase his returns and that he should announce that he will produce his collection in the US.

“Since China joined the WTO, Americans have witnessed the closure of more than 50,000 factories and the loss of tens of millions of jobs,” Trump says on his website for the US-China Trade Plan. Ironically, Trump outsources production to the very same countries that he feels are disrupting the economy.

A number of fashion companies and brands that produce in the US include Rag & Bone, Shinola, Schott, Baldwin Denim, J Brand, Eugenia Kim, Pamela Love, Pendleton, Steven Alan, Danner, Filson, The Hill-Side, Quoddy, and Save Khaki among others. American Apparel is a good example of a ‘Made in USA’ brand that kept its prices low despite the costs of comparatively higher cost of production and labor.

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace asked Trump if he would move the production of his clothing from Mexico and China to the US, and he said, “I will do that. By the way, I’ve been doing it more and more.”

Macy’s cut ties with Trump in July 2015 after the Republican candidate hopeful made inflammatory remarks about Mexico and its citizens in the month prior.

A spokesperson for Macy’s said in a statement, “In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macy’s values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump and will phase-out the Trump menswear collection.” Trump released a statement as well saying that he cut ties with the retailer.

In August, PVH, which holds the license for the Donald J. Trump Collection, decided to wind down production on the line after Macy’s decided to stop selling the collection. The apparel deal with PVH began in 2004 and was slated to end in 2018.
