UK footfall declined over Easter weekend

Published
Apr 7, 2015

Before the Easter weekend, UK retail intelligence provider Springboard reported that footfall over the holiday looked to increase by 4.7%. But post-weekend figures from Springboard, reported by a number of UK papers, show that total footfall actually fell 2% over the whole weekend, due to dreary weather conditions.

High street footfall was down 4.7%, while shopping centre footfall fell 0.3%. Retail parks fared better, benefiting from the wet and rainy weather, with footfall increasing 2.7%.

There was an increase in online shopping, which was up 11% on Good Friday alone.

"Consumers have been more cautious than we anticipated this Easter, possibly due to uncertainty with the upcoming election, and combined with the gloomy weather this has had an impact on footfall over the weekend, particularly for UK high streets," said Diane Wehrle, lead analyst at Springboard.
