UK women wear same few outfits on a loop says new survey

No matter how many clothes UK women have in their wardrobes they tend to wear the same few looks in rotation, a new survey shows.

Oxfam commissioned OnePoll to find out what people actually wear and found that most women rarely shift from their maximum-five-outfit loop, while just over half of men said 30% of their clothes never see the light of day. Women too admit that around one-third of the pieces they own are never worn.

The survey of 1,000 adults showed that most women stick with one pair of jeans, four T-shirts and three knits in various combinations and one reason many of their other clothes stay firmly in their drawers or wardrobes is because many items simply don’t fit. Some 73% of women and 60% of men said they own a number of items that don't fit.

And the reason for people wearing the same clothes over and over again is that they really do fit, and they feel comfortable. Three-quarters of women said that’s their main reason for rotating the same items over and over again.

Women also tend to stick with favourites for special occasions and 70% wear the same dress every time. Meanwhile, women rotate the same four looks for work and for men the number is even smaller with only three work outfits.

But while women wear the same clothes frequently, they also worry about being seen to do so, an issue that’s less of a worry for men.

The survey was commissioned as the charity launched a new appeal for unwanted clothes.
