Fast Retailing’s Uniqlo chain had a good month in Japan during December as its same-store sales across both its stores and webstore rose a healthy 6.2%, while total sales rose 6.1%.

As usual, the company was helped by the right kind of weather in the month. It said that it saw strong sales of “warm clothing for wearing in the home after the weather turned sharply colder in the middle of the month and items that neatly matched our customers' stay-at-home needs”.

Unlike in some markets, in Japan, the firm’s stores were largely able to operate in December, although five remained temporarily closed and another 84 were operating shorter working hours due to Covid-19.

The fact that all those stores that were either open for fewer hours or temporarily closed weren’t excluded from the figures underlines even further how relatively strong Uniqlo’s sales were.

The latest monthly figures topped off a series of good sales reports for the firm as it rode the wave of hot or cool weather throughout the summer and autumn and seemed well able to get the right product into its stores and online at just the right time.
