Unttld and Christopher Bates among 2019 CAFA nominees

The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) announced on Thursday the nominees for the 2019 edition of its annual Awards show where new and familiar faces in Canada’s fashion industry were recognized.

The sixth annual awards gala taking place on May 30, 2019, is one of Canada’s only awards night that recognizes Canadian-based designers and various members of Canada’s fashion industry.
 
Among the nominees for the 2019 event, designer Unttld and Greta Constantine were again nominated for The Womenswear Designer of the Year Award alongside Ellie Mae Studios, LINE, and Sid Neigum. 

Up for The Menswear Designer of the Year Award is Christopher Bates who will square off against Canadian brands Frank And Oak, Raised by Wolves and 18 Waits. 
 
In the accessories category, jewelry brands Pyrrha, Mejuri, Biko and Dean Davidson, will be up against vegan bag brand Matt & Nat. 
 
Meanwhile, for the Outerwear Designer of the Year Award, which was created just last year, royal-favourite Mackage was nominated as was Kanuk, Moose Knuckles, Nobis and Sentaler. 
 
Among emerging talent in the Canadian landscape Corey Moranis, Warren Steven Scott, Angela Mitchell, Jessica Bedard, and JY Gao were nominated for The Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in the Accessories category, while École de Pensée, Kathryn Bowen, Marie-Ève Lecavalier, Nonie and Andrew Coimbra were nominated in the Fashion category.
 
Nominees were equally named in categories including styling, modelling and for other fashion achievements.
 
“We are so excited to offer an opportunity for designers and brands to put themselves forward for consideration this year, and for CAFA to discover more talent from across the country,” said CAFA’s co-founders Vicky Milner. 
 
Photographer and photojournalist, Douglas Kirkland, will also be honoured during the evening with the 2019 Outstanding Achievement Award, while fashion and art curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot will be presented with the 2019 Vanguard Award.

Among the winners last year, Montreal-based designer Marie Saint Pierre was recognized with the womenswear designer of the year award, while fellow Montreal brand Atelier New Regime was named menswear designer of the year.

In the accessories category, Toronto-based handbag company, Ela, beat shoe brand Zvelle and Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co to take home the accessory designer of the year award.
 
The red carpet gala will take place at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto where the winners for a total of 17 award categories will be announced.
