Weak pound draws Easter tourists to London shops

LONDON (Reuters) - West End shopping streets expect to welcome more shoppers this Easter weekend as the weak pound draws in overseas visitors looking for a bargain, a retailers' association said on Monday 13 April.

New West End Company, which represents stores on Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street in London, said 2 million shoppers were set to flock to the area and retailers were reporting positive trading compared with last year.

"The weakening of the pound this year has seen international shoppers, the French, Italians and Americans, flock to the West End to enjoy the favourable exchange rates," said New West End spokesman Jace Tyrell.

The weakness of the pound also means British consumers are shopping at home over the long four-day weekend, rather than travelling abroad, Tyrell added.
