The Retail Council of Canada (RCC) announced on Tuesday Winnipeg's Diamond Gallery as the winner of the 2017 Independent Retailer of the Year Award.

The award is a part of RCC’s Excellence in Retail Awards and “recognizes the outstanding contributions of a local independent retailer to his or her community”.

Diamond Gallery was established in 1992 by Allan and Anita Malbranck. Their focus is on crafting Canadian custom designs in 95 percent recycled gold and platinum fused with ethically sourced gemstones.

"Diamond Gallery is an exceptional retailer who is as well known for its remarkable craftsmanship of custom heirloom jewellery as it is for its outstanding commitment to its customers and community" said Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO, Retail Council of Canada, in a news statement. "We are so proud to honour Diamond Gallery with this award as they embody the true spirit of entrepreneurship and community service and are a genuine ambassador of the retail industry."

Past recipients of RCC's Independent Retail Ambassador of the Year Award have included Rocky Mountain Soap Company, Reckless Bike Stores, Korry's Clothiers for Gentlemen, the Canadian Tire Corporation and more.

Last week, the not-for-profit industry-funded association, which represents medium and large retail businesses across the country, also named 61 finalists from 35 companies who are in the running for various awards as part of the 2017 Excellence in Retailing Awards. Fashion and apparel retailers included Canada Goose, Sport Chek, Mountain Equipment Co-Op, Roots Canada, Sears Canada Inc., Surmesur, Frank and Oak, and more. The awards recognize the top achievements of retail organizations in 10 retail categories covering a range of in-store, online and omni-channel operations.

The 2017 winners will be announced at the Excellence in Retailing Awards Gala on May 30, 2017.
