Zumiez posts surprise rise in August same-store sales

Sept 3 (Reuters) - Snowboarding gear retailer Zumiez Inc posted a surprise 0.2 percent rise in August sales at stores open at least a year, sending its shares up 6 percent in after-market trading.
Six analysts, were on average, expecting same-store sales to fall 3.8 percent, according to Thomson Reuters Estimates.
"Footwear, accessories, and boys apparel posted positive comps for the month, partially offset by negative comps in juniors and mens apparel, and skate hard goods," Zumiez CFO Trevor Lang said in a pre-recorded call.
The retailer of action-sports-related apparel, footwear, equipment and accessories said total net sales for the four-week period ended August 30 rose 13.1 percent to $53.2 million.
Zumiez, which currently operates 330 stores, cater to young men and women between ages 12 and 24 years.
Shares of the mall-based retailer were up 98 cents at $17.41 in trading after the bell. They had closed at $16.43 Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Dhanya Skariachan in Bangalore; Editing by Anthony Kurian)
