Barneys New York announces Matthew Mazzucca as new creative director
Mar 9, 2017
Luxury retailer Barneys New York has announced the appointment of Matthew Mazzucca as creative director, replacing industry veteran Dennis Freedman. Mazzucca joined the Barneys team in 2011 in the role of Director of Design. Since then, he has focused his talents on creating memorable window displays and in-store designs. In his new role, Matthew will also oversee all creative direction and artistic initiatives, including working on the store’s print campaigns.
A focus of Mazzucca will be connecting with and educating the consumer through visuals, editorials and social media. “The goal is...to provide the customer with a fully immersive experience,” he said in an interview on The Window, the Barneys blog. Mazzucca will also look at ways to effectively incorporate digital technology into the shopping experience.
“The role of digital technology and its impact on how we experience commerce is already one thread of our DNA, but it will be further developed with regard to our visual and print media and holiday programs,” he said. “The role it plays is already a familiar one in that context, but its use will be more extensive than it has been in the past.”
Mazzucca’s appointment comes as the company restructures some of its top positions. It was recently announced that CEO Mark Lee would retire and will be named executive chairman reporting to Richard Perry. Daniella Vitale, formerly COO at Barneys, will be assuming the role of CEO.
