Covet Fashion launches diverse virtual models in new update

Published
Jan 16, 2017

Developer Glu Mobile this week launched an update to mobile styling app Covet Fashion. The new look features virtual models in various sizes, shapes, heights, skin colors and facial features.

The new models introduced on the Covet Fashion app

As of this week, 50 new models are featured in the app’s Style Challenges where users can style the models for parties and red carpet events among others. Covet Fashion added the diverse models in response to its users’ that wanted the virtual models to represent real women.

"When we launched in 2013, we didn't realize the platform would so strongly impact our users' everyday lives in such a personal way," said Blair Ethington, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Covet Fashion. "Because of the creative and interactive nature of the app, our audience has become emotionally invested - both in each other and in the content they create. When some users told us that they didn't feel represented and when we realized the opportunity we had to impact so many women in a positive way, we knew we had a responsibility to spread a message of empowerment."

The introduction of new models is not a one-time thing for Covet Fashion too. The app plans make more additions and changes to celebrate all women through its platform called “Evolving the Standards of Beauty”.

Consumers have felt a need for inclusion in the fashion and beauty industries. In recent years, many women have called for proper representation and diversity from brands and companies, whether it be the inclusion of women of color or women of varying body types.

American Eagle has benefitted from making plus-size model Iskra Lawrence the face of Aerie and Christian Siriano has been heavily praised for designing dresses for women of all sizes. Diversity on magazine covers has also increased over the years with 52 covers out of 147 issues in 2016 featuring people of color. In addition, L’Oréal kicked off 2017 with a new diversity campaign to promote its True Match foundation.

Covet Fashion is available for download on iOS and Android.
