Google enters the world of fashion

Published
Nov 17, 2010

Fashion bloggers, designers, retailers and celebrities will be attending a fashion party tonight hosted by Google in New York. After ‘tweets’ from an anonymous fashion PR revealed that Google was launching an ecommerce site with major designers shops, it was not long until people who had received the mysterious invitation about an event called ‘High Tech Fuses With High Fashion presented by Google’ started linking the two together.

Google
Boutiques.com

One blog to receive the invitation was Frockwriter. According to their journalist Patty Huntington, Google’s new e-tailing website will be called Boutiques.com and it will consist of online boutiques managed by dozens of celebrities, designers, retailers and bloggers. Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung, Selfridges and Net-a-Porter.com are a few of the ones who have already agreed to participate. The website will also be featuring high-profile stars such as Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham, Emma Watson and Sarah Jessica Parker, allowing users to get the look of their favourite celebrities with just the click of a mouse.

Google will apparently be making use of their newly acquired image-recognition software from Like.com in order to make it easier for users to compare and contrast products. According to WSJ, the world’s biggest search engine hopes to become a key player in the US$140 billion e-commerce market and will aim to compete against sites like Amazon or Ebay.
