Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition to open in Montreal

Published
Apr 30, 2017

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is bringing together over thirty of Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute couture bridal creations in a new exhibition, running May 27 to October 9.

Baptized 'Love is Love: Wedding Bliss for all à la Jean Paul Gaultier', the exhibition presents 36 wedding gowns and suits created between 1990 and 2017 by the French designer. The exhibition promotes the acceptance of diversity and the fight against homophobia, an ongoing commitment of Jean Paul Gaultier and the MMFA.

The new exhibition opens as the tour of 'The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk', draws to a close, and will serve as the grand finale. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier welcomed over two million visitors in twelve cities around the world as part of a five-year tour including San Francisco, Madrid, Rotterdam, Stockholm, New York, London, Melbourne, Paris, Seoul and Munich.

“In keeping with tradition, whereby an haute couture fashion show finishes with the bridal gown and to thank Quebecers for their enthusiasm for my work, but also the MMFA’s creative team behind this record-setting tour, it is only fitting that the grand finale feature my most beautiful wedding gowns, most of which are being shown for the first time in this Montreal exclusive. Love is love, long live the newlyweds!” said designer Jean Paul Gaultier, in a news statement.

The exhibition will be organized around a monumental wedding cake. To encapsulate the message of diversity and acceptance, the designs will be presented on mannequins that embody couples of every gender and orientation.

The exhibition is produced by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. It is curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot under the direction of Nathalie Bondil.
