Peter Blair Henry has joined multinational sportswear brand Nike, Inc.’s Board of Directors as the company seeks to galvanize its international operations, it was announced on Tuesday.

“Peter is a recognized authority in global economics, international finance and foreign affairs,” said Mark Parker, Nike Chairman and CEO. “We believe his expertise will be invaluable to our board as we create new growth opportunities and accelerate our international momentum.”

Henry is Dean Emeritus of New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business, as well as William R. Berkley Professor of Economics and Finance.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Citigroup, General Electric, the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Economic Club of New York.

Henry is the youngest person ever to have held the Deanship at NYU Stern, a position that he took up in January 2010. Prior to this, he was the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Economics at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and a Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research.

He is also a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and the Economic Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

In December of last year, Nike reported a fall of 5% in its second quarter sales in North America, the company’s second consecutive quarter of decline. The brand is now attempting to restructure its business in the region but is still facing stiff competition from Adidas which is on the rise.

International results, however, were more positive, with quarterly revenues in Europe and Greater China up 19% and 16%, respectively. At the time, the company stated that it expected the international market to account for 75% of its sales growth in the future.
