Nordstrom expands extended sizing to 30 stores and 100 brands

Seattle-based department store chain Nordstrom, Inc. announced on Tuesday that it is expanding extended sizing to 30 locations around the country as well as 100 new brands, in an effort to make the apparel shopping experience more inclusive for all, both on and offline.

The company is adding more size zeros, 2's, 14's, 16's and 18's across a wide range of categories, including denim, activewear, dresses and swimwear, and will signal the changes with new signage in participating stores.
 
Among the new locations offering extended sizing are Nordstrom’s Downton Portland, Oregon and Downtown Seattle stores, as well as locations in Chicago and Atlanta. A further three of the newly participating stores are in California and two in the state of New York.

Brands now offering extended sizing include Nike, Adidas and Beyond Yoga in the activewear category, as well as Rebecca Taylor and Theory, not to mention Nordstrom private-label brands Halogen, Zella and Nordstrom Signature.
 
The initiative was launched at Nordstrom Century City in LA in October of last year and was expanded to Nordstrom’s e-commerce site with 40 participating brands for holiday 2017. At that point, the company intended to expand extended sizing to 15 stores and 60 brands by spring 2018, an objective it has convincingly surpassed with its latest announcement.
 
“The industry really needed a retailer to be the voice of customers and ask for more sizes,” said Tricia Smith, Nordstrom vice president and general merchandise manager for women’s apparel, in a release. “It's been hard work and we're making progress. We're thrilled more and more brands are extending their offerings to this population of stylish women who were previously missed. We remain focused, inspired and committed to inclusivity and having more sizes available to serve customers.”
 
Looking forward, Nordstrom hopes to further expand extended sizing for its upcoming Anniversary Sale, with plans for a number of its own private-label brands to offer pieces up to size 24. Fall 2018 will also see the arrival of new inclusively proportioned mannequins in 30 Nordstrom stores, while the company continues to negotiate extended sizing with European brand partners.
 
Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale starts on July 20, 2018.
