Primark to open in France by September

Jan 23, 2013

The British budget clothing retailer has announced plans to open stores in France. John Bason, Finance Director of Primark’s mother-company Associated British Foods, has confirmed that the first Primark store will open towards the end of the company’s financial year in September.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the chief said that the first stores will serve as a test run. If all goes well, Primark could open half a dozen stores across France in 2013 and 2014. The group is likely to look for locations in shopping centres, measuring around 50,000 square feet.

In September, French newspaper Le Figaro claimed that the brand was in negotiations with shopping centres in Marseille, Créteil and Aulnay sous Bois. There was also talk that Primark would open in Aéroville, a large commercial project neighbouring Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, due to open this year.

The information comes as Primark reported in November a 3% increase in like-for-like sales for its previous financial year. With already more than 250 stores in the United Kingdom and Europe, the brand is keen to look for growth in new markets.
