Public School's Trump hat serves charitable cause

Published
Mar 3, 2017

At Public School’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection, shown last month at New York Fashion Week, designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne sent a pointed message to President Trump with a “Make America New York” hat. The design duo just announced that proceeds from the sales of the hat will go towards the ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union.

100% of the proceeds from the $65 hat will go towards the ACLU, a non-profit organization that fights "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the constitution and laws of the United States."

The bright red hat, first seen on the duo’s runway, is almost an exact replica of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hat, save for Chow and Osborne’s tongue-in-cheek twist of the presidential slogan. The numbers “44 ½”, in reference to Trump being the 45th president of the United States, were stitched into the side of the hat.

The hat was available at the Hudson Street Public School location and Public School’s online site, but it was promptly swooped up by fans, selling out in under 24 hours.

Public School is just one brand as of late to use their name to speak out about the new president. Some brands have used products to campaign for women’s rights: Reformation has launched a series of “My Meow, My Choice” shirts, with proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. The CFDA handed out Planned Parenthood buttons and information sheets at NYFW, encouraging designers, models, PR representatives, and the press to wear the buttons. Even Dior’s “We Should All Be Feminists” shirt will donate a portion of the proceeds to Rihanna’s Clara Lionel foundation, which works to provide education to women in impoverished communities around the world.
