Ryerson University launches open access fashion journal

Published
May 18, 2017

Canada’s Ryerson University and the FCAD Centre for Fashion Diversity and Social Change launched on Tuesday a new fashion academia journal.

Dubbed “Fashion Studies”, the journal’s aim is to reimagine the fashion industry as an inclusive place and to examine the relationship between fashion, diversity and social change.

Fashion Studies is also the first open access fashion journal, meaning it is available at no cost to readers or authors, allowing for fashion research and creative work to be accessible to all.

Led by FCAD professors Ben Barry and Alison Matthews David, the journal will cover such topics as fashion and equality, fashion and the environment, fashion inclusion and representation, fashion, identity and the body, Fashion and political change, and Indigenous fashion.

“Fashion Studies has managed to bridge social sciences and humanities research. We founded this journal because we feel that creative and arts-based work should also be welcomed with open arms,” explained Matthews David, in a news statement.

The journal will accept academic papers, creative work and interviews, and will be published annually. Acceptance is based on a double-blind peer-review process by top scholarly and creative academics from London College of Fashion, Parsons the New School, OCAD University and more.
