TheMicam opens its doors in Milan on 15th February

Published
Feb 12, 2015

TheMicam opens this Sunday during the ongoing economic crisis. To counter this gloominess and add a touch of glamour to the event, the international footwear trade show will be featuring runway shows. The trade fair tried this back in 1994 and 1995 but under a different formula. This time the shows are being organised by the Rosemary Ferrari agency with WGSN, both of which have chosen the shoe models for women, men and children from among the exhibitors.

The highlight of the event is expected on Monday the 16th with a show "celebrating Made in Italy". In addition, the trade fair is counting on the return of some big names, like Ruco Line and Stéphane Kélian.

This year, theMicam will be holding runway shows

Nevertheless, a bit more is needed to breathe some optimism back into the Italian shoewear sector. This 79th edition, taking place 15 to 18 February at Milan's Rho-Pero exhibition centre, and presenting the collections for fall/winter 2015-16, has announced some 1,500 companies from around the world. The organisers are not getting their hopes up though.

At the end of the year, sales of Italian shoes saw a rapid slowdown and it looks as though 2014 will close in the negative for the first time with an estimated decline of -2/-3%. This at least in regards to volumes, with the market dropping to under 200 million pairs of shoes sold, which hasn't happened since 2008.

The 79th edition of TheMicam has announced more than 1,500 exhibitors

The decline continued in the domestic market while in the Russian market sales plummeted. "Russia represents our 5th biggest market, but in reality particularly for Italian shoes, and specifically from the central Italian region. Our sales to Russia dove 30% last year, which puts 20% of our jobs at risk," worries Cleto Sagripanti, who will be officiating as president over this edition of theMicam for the last time, as his mandate ends in June.

TheMicam has confirmed the new layout, which was revealed in September with a main aisle called Corso Italia leading to the different sections of the salon (luxury, contemporary, urban, children, active sports, cosmopolitan, street and international designers) and to the "TheMicam Square" space, where presentations, seminars and other events linked to the world of shoes will take place.

For its September session, TheMicam recorded the presence of 34,176 visitors, while in March 2014 it recorded 33,372 visitors.
