What is luxury? Decryption and immersion with Olivier Gabet

What is luxury? what does it mean today? how does it materialize over time ? the musée des arts décoratifs in paris sheds light on this through a hundred objects, which left a mark on their time, revealing a plural luxury!interview with olivier gabet:luxury, before being a material reality, was above all an anthropological, philosophical and cultural notion, and that is what we wanted to highlight through our works. we try to make our visitors reflect precisely on this evolution and ductility of the word ‘luxury’, which is very strong and from the fourth millennium bc, which was, i believe, the oldest work that we present in the exhibition until the day before yesterday, with the jacquemus piece behind me, dating from 2020.luxury, for a very long time, has been considered linked to the latin root lux, light. today, people hear that luxury comes, rather, from another latin root, luxus, which relates to what is dislocated, displaced, shifted. it is still something which gives a form of distinction, which brings an extra-special something, an addition to a social position which embodies notions which are intangible, the sacred, time, the mastery of time, the notion of beauty which is quite a relative notion.if we went onto rue de rivoli today, among passers-by and cyclists, and asked people what luxury means to them, i am sure that within the top five responses, there would be quite a few material things. there would undoubtedly be more intangible notions, such as time, space, the possibility of moving around, the freedom to do as we please, to move.there would be three elements that i would compare with luxury. there is the boscoreale treasure, which is one of the most beautiful archaeological treasures found after the excavations of pompeii. it incorporates everything to do with luxury in antiquity. the second object i would say is emblematic for me is this hispano-suiza h6 from 1925, because this notion of displacement and time is today something quite fundamental. and then, the third is the simon porte jacquemus dress, a linen piece that has been photographed a lot. simon porte jacquemus, has an extremely strong discourse especially with young people, he is very followed on social media. it is also this relationship, as new as luxury, that is a driving force for major societal changes.what is luxury? what does it mean today? how does it materialize over time ? the musée des arts décoratifs in paris sheds light on this through a hundred objects, which left a mark on their time, revealing a plural luxury!
